Abstract

The HIV and AIDS pandemic is having a significant impact on South Africa’s public andprivate sectors. Because it primarily affects working-age adults, its impact is seen in an increasein absenteeism and sick leave, a faster staff turnover rate due to early deaths, more employeesplaced on disability pensions, lowered staff morale and greater pressure on employee benefitsfunds (Department of Labour, 2003). To counteract these trends, the workplace has a vital roleto play in preventing infection amongst staff members and to deal effectively with those whodo become infected. This usually takes the form of an HIV and AIDS workplace programme
