COMMUNITY HOME-BASED CARE PROGRAMME: A MARGINALISED KEY COMMUNITY RESOURCE

The escalating pandemic of HIV and AIDS has challenged the operation of many social institutions globally, regionally and locally, with the health sector bearing the brunt of the scourge. AIDS-related illnesses have killed more than 25 million people globally since the disease was first recognised in 1981, making it the most destructive epidemic in recorded history. Despite recent improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claimed 3.1 million lives in 2005, of which 750 000 were children (UNAIDS, 2005:3). The HIV and AIDS pandemic has had a grave impact on Africa, with more than 70% of the people globally living with HIV and AIDS residing on this continent (UNAIDS, 2005:2).Downloads
