Abstract

From reading the newspapers and watching television, all of us will have frequently heard the term "business confidence". This notion refers to the faith that businessmen and entrepreneurs have in the climate in which they operate, specifically that the climate is such that they will be able to do business profitable. When they have confidence and belief about their chances of being succesful, they will invest and take risks; when they are doubtful and pessimistic about present and future prospects, they will sit tight and protect their existing assets from possible hazard and jeopardy.

Business confidence does not come about only as a result of objective influences: indeed, it is for the most part shaped and formed by subtle, subjective perceptions and emotional forces. However, no matter how subjective and intangible the notion of business confidence is, if this ingredient is missing, entrepreneurial growth in commerce and industry will not occur, no matter how positive and attractive all the other ingredients of the mix are.
