Tribute to Prof Midgley

The editors are saddened to share the news of the passing of Prof James Midgley on 21 June 2026. Prof Midgley is widely regarded as a pioneer in international social welfare scholarship, with notable emphasis on social policy and social development in the Global South.
Prof Midgley published his very first article in 1969, in Social Work/Maatskaplike Werk. We are honoured to have published his final scholarly contribution in our latest issue.
He leaves a lasting legacy through his commitment to advancing knowledge in the field of social work and social development, his work continues to shape social work practice, policy and research.
